This past fall, we heard Walter Brueggemann open our eyes and our minds to the life we are leading, life in the world of the Empire rather than understanding God’s call to us to live the other way. The Book of Daniel was brought to life and many of us were surprised at how relevant this Old Testament book is today. What we discovered was a call to live differently…but the question is what are we to do? How can we live The Other Way?

During Epiphany we will offer two concurrent 4week sessions to help us in these next steps. One is a fourweek series on Benedictine Living led by Roger Greene. The other is a video series in which we will look at common themes in our daily life and how we can live them The Other Way.

Benedictine Living in the 21st century

A young man named Benedict, in the 6th century, left behind his studies in the city of Rome and moved to the Italian countryside to find something more important than mere intellectual education, wealth or status. Not long after Benedict began his quest, others who also wanted more out of life joined him. Eventually Benedict founded various monastic communities whose common life was governed by a Rule. Everything about Benedict’s Rule has to do with a deeper relationship with Christ. In this four week series, we will let Benedict be our guide to a deeper way of living. Emphasis will be placed on incorporating aspects of the Rule into our daily life.

Rob Bell – NOOMA DVD series

When Jesus taught about life's toughest issues, he used short, simple stories. Rob Bell's modern "parables" on film follow his lead. Concise, powerful 10 to 14 minute DVDs tackle topics like forgiveness, discipleship, and unconditional love, making biblical truths vivid and relevant for today's generation. We will break into small groups to discuss each presentation.

Robert Holmes Bell Jr., founding pastor of Mars Hill Bible Church located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a bestselling author and Christian speaker. Bell is the featured speaker in the first series of NOOMA’s – a series of short films that explore questions that might arise as a person explores the Christian faith. His Everything is Spiritual national speaking tour drew soldout crowds in cities across North America. The proceeds from ticket sales were used to support WaterAid, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people escape the poverty and disease caused by living without safe water and sanitation.
